The Countdown Ticks … How MyFab Creates Demand
Sep 17th, 2009 by admin
The French MyFab has launched in Germany this week. And with it finally another e-commerce startup with an equally original as well as fascinating business model. At latest since Vente-Prive, it has been well known how lucrative it can be to generate pre-orders. MyFab is a very successful mix of Threadless and Letsbuyit.com: Exclusive (designer) furniture will only be produced when a sufficient number of buyers are found.

Our favourite part of the site is therefore the Countdown:
All myfab products are offered for a time period of 3-7 days, during which orders will be taken.
At the end of a sales promotion, myfab transfers the complete order to the manufacturer who will make the product on demand.
As long as a collection is successful it will be offered again - otherwise it will be retired.
MyFab shows very clearly how its possible to integrate a contemporary production process into a compelling business model, something which only a few have been successful with in the mass customization and/or crowdsourcing areas.
MyFab was founded in 2008 in France and announced a 5 million euro capital round last June - under the leadership of BV Capital in Hamburg, Germany.
The German news e-zine Spiegel Online has written a comprehensive PR report on MyFab, and Thorsten Boersma has also taken a closer look (both articles in German).
