The Wine Market in France and Germany
Jul 28th, 2009 by admin
The findings of a recently published (FR/EN) wine report from Frances Journal du Net show that the French online wine market is with a good 100 million euro more than double that of Germanys (which lies around 43 million euro according to bvh estimates for 2007, GE/EN).

Interesting to read who in France are the revenue and innovation drivers:
According to the Journal du Net, three wine sites are each making over 5 million euro annual revenue: 1855 (10 million euro), ChateauOnline (10 million euro) and WineandCo (6 million euro). In Germany there is only one site known to be turning over more than 5 million euro. Any tips to further wine sites would be very appreciated. ChateauOnline, who describe themselves as the European market leader in online wine sales, has also recently opened up a German site:
Apparently the French dont know the German market leader, who claim to be at just about 14 million euro in e-commerce revenue (2008), (GE/EN).
There are about 200 wine websites in France, of those more than can be believed are earning over a million euro in revenue.
Similar to the USA, the French online wine business is booming with live shopping offers. Still, the winners in France seem to be mainly private sales clubs in the style of Vente-Prive:
1jour1vin was founded in March 2006 and reached revenue levels of 1.5 million euro in 2008 (+300%). The revenue is targeted to double in 2009.
VenteAlaPropriete earned 1.7 million euro (+220%) in 2008 and plans to grow to 4 million in 2009. Journal du Net wrote an overview on the site in September (FR/EN).
In Germany, the live shopping offers in the wine arena fall a bit flat (see Weiss Rot Ros oder Ebrosia- 1 Tag, ein Wein "1 Day, one wine"). Perhaps the freshly started Enomio will bring some more life to the scene.
For our Top 500 list of German shops, we are looking for wine merchants with online revenues of more than 500,000 million euro. Tips would be very appreciated.
